Pipe Repair & Repiping
Pipes crack, corrode and leak, and in this housing stock a great many of them are original. The question is almost never whether a length can be patched — it is whether patching it is throwing good money at a system that is going to keep asking.
The galvanised problem
Older homes around here are still running on galvanised steel supply pipe. It corrodes from the inside, so it looks fine from the outside right up until it does not, and the bore closes up gradually until the pressure upstairs is a trickle.
That is the classic sign: weak flow at the top of the house, discoloured water first thing, and a run of pinhole leaks that start arriving closer and closer together. Once a system is doing that, replacing it section by section is a subscription rather than a repair.
Repairs, done as repairs
Not everything needs a repipe, and we are not going to pretend it does. A frozen split, a failed fitting, a pinhole in an otherwise sound copper run — those are repairs, and they should be priced and done as repairs.
- Burst and frozen pipe repair
- Pinhole leaks in copper
- Failed or corroded fittings and valves
- Exposed pipe in unheated spaces insulated properly
- Sections of failing galvanised replaced where a full repipe is not warranted
Whole-home repiping
A repipe is disruptive and there is no honest way to describe it otherwise. What we can do is plan the route to open as little as possible, work in stages so the house is not without water for days, and tell you before we start where access holes will need to go.
It is also the moment to correct everything that was awkward about the old layout, because it will never be this easy to reach again.
Signs the supply pipe is on its way out
- — Pressure that drops noticeably upstairs
- — Rusty or brown water when a tap has stood overnight
- — More than one pinhole leak in the same year
- — Visible green or white crusting at joints
- — Pipes that are cold to the point of sweating in summer and freezing in winter
