Thermostat Installation
A thermostat is a small job with an outsized effect on both comfort and running costs. It is also the job most often got wrong by a confident afternoon and a box from a big-box store.
Not every thermostat suits every system
The compatibility question is the whole job. Millivolt systems, line-voltage baseboard, two-stage heating, heat pumps and steam systems all want different things, and a great many popular smart thermostats assume a common wire that older systems here simply do not have.
Fitted to the wrong system, the results range from a thermostat that never quite holds temperature to equipment that short-cycles itself into an early failure.
What we do
We check what the system actually needs first, fit the thermostat properly, and set it up so it works the way the household lives rather than leaving it on factory defaults.
- Compatibility checked against the heating system before anything is bought
- Common wire run where one is needed and can be run
- Programmable and smart thermostats set up and tested
- Placement advice — a thermostat in a draught or over a radiator reads the wrong room
- Multi-zone systems set up zone by zone
Placement matters more than the model
A good thermostat in a bad spot performs worse than a basic one in a good spot. Direct sun, a draughty hallway, an exterior wall or the space above a heat source will all make it read a temperature the rest of the house is not experiencing.
If yours is in one of those places, moving it is often the entire fix.
